The Urbanheart Design Research Group is an informal collaborative of research students and recent graduates within BERG who share a keen interest in assisting governments and communities in furthering the knowledge base on urban design issues by providing quality planning and design research outcomes which contribute to Victoria’s future growth.

FUNDED Grants Building
on the professional and government links developed in the Urban Heart
Surgery forum has been able to facilitate a doctoral research program
in Regional Urbanism. Winning a double APAI (Industrial Partnered)
Australian Research Council grant to fund two PhD students, valued
at $165,000, the program involves cross-discipline collaboration in
three core knowledge bases: socio-economics, demographics and physical
infrastructure. Research focuses on developing indicators and benchmarks
for assisting local governments in understanding the future needs
of their communities. Current partners involve: BERG, the Built Environment
Research Group, Deakin; the Planning Departments at both the City
of Bendigo and the City of Warrnambool; and CSRC (the Centre for Sustainable
